Why do I have a low self-esteem?

Often, men and women have low self-esteem, treating each other with little affection and disrespect for themselves. The person who will always accompany you throughout your life’s journey is yourself, so it is going to be important that you take care of your self-esteem. The definition of self-esteem is a set of perceptions, thoughts, evaluations, feelings and tendencies of behavior directed towards our person, towards our way of being, and towards the features of our body and our character. This is a subject that concerns us all, or at least, this is established by the enormous interest that hundreds of books, thousands of articles and dozens of theories have been made around self-esteem. However, self-esteem is not an easy subject and its understanding requires a dedication to its study. Low self-esteem is a problem that affects many people of different nationalities but curiously most are not aware of it. When we go to the
psychologist for problems of anxiety and depression in most cases what comes first to these diseases is low self-esteem, but people are usually not aware of it, or the way it affects our mental health.


In the construction of our own self-esteem, each human being travels a path that is unique and incomparable with that of others. Self-esteem is gradually being forged, and although personal characteristics influence, the experiences lived and the people with whom you relate are a decisive factor. This will result in a subjective sense of personal value or on the contrary of disability.


The first years of life are crucial for the formation of a high or low self-esteem, but also the experiences that we are living as adults can modify it. Among the multiple causes of low self- esteem we can point out the following: Physical, sexual, and emotional abuses, and more at an
early age, the degree of expectations to which we were exposed in our childhood by our parents and teachers, suffering from any type of discrimination, harassment or bullying, a loss of a loved one, social exclusion, face unemployment or precarious work situations.


When a person goes through difficult times, almost without realizing it, they create negative beliefs about themselves. Whether it’s about your intellectual capacity, your appearance, or your abilities to succeed in life. What should be highlighted about low self-esteem is that it is
generally based on beliefs and not on facts, and the belief system of people can be modified and shaped with therapies and psychotherapies with the help of a mental health professional, learn to increase your self-concept, self-image dignity and effectiveness, the healing of our self- esteem will be a key factor in feeling good about ourselves and having better mental health.
